The medieval town of Obidos is one of the treasures of the West of Portugal. Here you will find numerous tourist attractions in a village that once fortified not only the Portuguese nation whose founding origins of the Romans left. Without dispense a complete visit to the village, the monuments that most characterize Óbidos arise at the entrance to the "Porta da Vila", and you can scroll through historical paths that guide us to the castle, which fortifications protected Romans, Arabs and Portugueses.




The town of Óbidos

  • Inside of the Obidos Castle walls arises the Vila that throughout history has been growing and developing its medieval culture as well as local businesses. We can be dazzled by fantastic sights like the "Rua Direita", “Porta do Vale” and the “Pelourinho" which gives the village a richness of heritage material. Being a medieval village, the Catholic Church is largely the architectural heritage of Óbidos, it is possible to visit inside and outside the village five churches, a chapel, two Hermitage and the iconic Shrine of Lord Jesus of Stone.


Obidos Castle

  • The Obidos Castle dates back to its origin on the Roman period and was fortified and inhabited by Arabs, which later was reconquered by the Christians. With Medieval, Moorish and Manuelino characteristics, this castle can enjoy the crossroads of several generations and cultures for its buildings and building styles. Situated high on a hill, the Obidos Castle served as a strong town and strategic point in the reconquest of Portugal from the Moors.


Buddha Eden Garden

  • The oriental garden with around 35 hectares of land was created as a reaction to the destruction of the Buddhas of Banyan, in which one of the greatest acts of cultural barbarity took place, erasing masterpieces of late-period Gandhara art.
    From Buddhas, pagodas, terracotta statues and the various carefully-placed sculptures which can be found throughout the gardens, it is estimated that some six thousand tons of marble and granite were used to create this monumental work of art.
    The central staircase is the focal point of the garden, where the golden Buddhas offer you a calm welcome.
    At the central lake, KOI (Japanese carp) fish can be seen, and sculpted dragons rise out of the water.
    There is also the opportunity to see the seven hundred hand-painted terracotta soldiers, each of them unique copies of those which were buried some 2,200 years ago.
    You will be truly enchanted with the peace and tranquillity of this unique and special place.




  • We will know the biggest Palace of Portugal , also built in the eighteenth century by our megalomaniac King João V ! This building , in addition to the palace function , was also a monastery and still had an imposing basilica. To get an idea of ​​the magnitude of this construction , we can say that the palace has a facade of 220 meters and has more than 600 rooms and 5200 doors and windows ! Its support a park with about 20 km perimeter ( Tapada de Mafra) .
